Common causes of erectile dysfunction (ED) include any combination of psychological, emotional, and physical conditions. Additionally, certain medications can lead to ED. Many men experience ED as they get older and their testosterone levels naturally decline. Testosterone plays a role in the desire for sex (libido), as well as their energy levels, mood, and ability to lose weight as you get older, which can all affect sexual desire and contribute to ED.
Low testosterone may be a contributing factor for erectile dysfunction (ED), but probably not the only cause. Research indicates that 1 in 3 men with ED also have low testosterone. Low testosterone can contribute to ED by lowering your libido (low sex drive), affecting your mood and stress levels, and causing fatigue and low energy. Persistent low testosterone may lead to decreased physical activity, weight gain, and lower self-confidence; all potential components of sexual dysfunction.
If you’re experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED), you may be wondering what the most likely drugs to cause erectile dysfunction are. Several types of drugs may contribute to ED and other types of sexual dysfunction in men, including:
If your testosterone levels have declined with age, you may benefit from bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Testosterone replacement is a common therapy for men with erectile dysfunction, which may provide relief from many related symptoms.
Other hormones and supplements may be added to your personalized therapy, like pregnenolone, DHEA, aromatase inhibitors, chrysin, or trace minerals, to better regulate hormonal imbalances and address specific symptoms. Medications like oxytocin, may help increase your desire for sex if low libido is a concern.
If BHRT doesn’t help with ED and other types of sexual dysfunction, sterile injectable medications (intracavernosal injections) may be an option. These medications are injected directly into the penis and produce a more immediate result vs. oral medications such as sildenafil citrate, vardenafil, and tadalafil.
